Anterior and left lateral views of the vastus medialis of the quadriceps femoris group. The rectus femoris has been ghosted in both views. The vastus lateralis has been ghosted in on the left side of the anterior view.

The Vastus Medialis is a member of the Quadriceps Femoris Group, which is composed of the:

  • Rectus femoris
  • Vastus lateralis
  • Vastus medialis
  • Vastus intermedius

ATTACHMENTS:

  • The vastus medialis attaches from the medial lip of the linea aspera of the femur to the tibial tuberosity (via the patella and [infra-]patellar ligament).

ACTIONS:

  • Extends the leg at the knee joint.
  • Tracks the patella medially at the patellofemoral joint.

NOTE: The distal fibers of the vastus medialis form a characteristic teardrop shape and are often referred to as the vastus medialis oblique (VMO).
