To some people, school years are one of the most entertaining years in life, which probably is the case; however, it doesn’t change the fact that this period can be full of stress as well! That’s because these young people have a lot of things on their plates, such as exams, assignments, part-time jobs, and so on.
All of these things can be extremely overwhelming and may even result in stress and anxiety. But that surely doesn’t mean that there’s no way out and that you cannot navigate these issues in any way.
On the contrary, there are a lot of different ways you can tackle your student life, and if you are interested in unveiling them, then just pay attention to the ones that are about to be enumerated below!
Start With Mindfulness & Breathing Exercises!
When students are completely stressed or anxious, their ability to focus and solve problems totally tanks. Mindfulness acts like a reset button, pulling them back into the present moment by instantly lowering stress levels and calming down a fired-up nervous system.
Simple breathing exercises—like box breathing or the 4-7-8 method—give the body a physical cue to slow down, helping kids thoughtfully respond to a challenge instead of just wildly reacting to it.
The absolute best part about these techniques is that they are super simple, you can use them anywhere, and they work incredibly well for kids of all age groups.
Certain Coping Strategies May Not Be Particularly Beneficial!
No one denies the fact that students go through a lot of stressful situations, and, unfortunately, at times, they resort to different unhealthy mechanisms to overcome them. They may become glued to their screens, experience insomnia, or even turn to drugs and/or alcohol.
They are convinced that some of these things will permanently solve their problems, without realizing that they do not offer anything but temporary relief. If you notice that someone that you know has started abusing certain substances, then it’s time to do something about it.
Like what? Many families turn to premium addiction treatment in Orange County because, as it turned out, it’s a great option for any young person who is struggling with various substances. Out there, they’ll receive the necessary treatments and support.
What matters the most in these instances is that you show compassion and understanding instead of judgment!
High-Quality Sleep Is Everything
The American Psychological Association points out that a good night’s sleep is how our brains recharge, our muscles heal, our memories lock in, and our immune systems get a massive boost.
Despite that, a TimelyCare survey found that over half of college students are getting under six hours of sleep a night—crashing way below the 7 to 9 hours recommended by the National Sleep Foundation.
Tons of students still pull all-nighters to cram for exams, but that habit quickly snowballs into chronic sleep deprivation and insomnia. Starving your body of sleep completely tanks your brainpower, your grades, and your mental health.
If you are struggling to pass out at night, try quick fixes like cutting back on late-day caffeine, dimming your room lights, and putting your phone away at least an hour before hitting the pillow.
Being Active Is Pivotal, Too!
It is widely known that exercising, in general, is very beneficial for your physical health, but what’s often overlooked is that it is also beneficial for your mental health. It has been proven numerous times before that working out alleviates stress.
And that’s not everything. Apart from that, it enhances mental clarity, lowers tiredness, and improves cognitive function. Once any form of physical activity is over, your brain begins generating feel-good neurotransmitters, which are some of the best painkillers.
If you want to take things to the next level, when it comes to this, you can always resort to meditation or any other relaxation technique after exercising.
Recovery Cannot Occur In A Flash
Students often expect themselves to instantly bounce back the second a stressful week ends, but real recovery takes time. After grinding through intense exams, wrapping up a massive project, dealing with a rough personal situation, or surviving a brutal semester, needing some serious time to recharge is completely normal.
Recovery can look like finally catching up on your sleep, hanging out with people who actually lift you up, getting back into hobbies you love, or temporarily dropping any extra commitments that aren’t absolutely necessary.
We know that being a student isn’t always smooth sailing; however, as you can see, there are a lot of awesome strategies that you can opt for that are designed to help you go through everything as smoothly as you can.
