- The inferior attachments of the iliocostalis and longissimus originate lower in the spine. The iliocostalis attaches superiorly to the posterior tubercles of the transverse processes of C4-C7. The longissimus attaches superiorly to the articular and/or posterior tubercles of the transverse processes of C2-C7 and the mastoid process of the temporal bone. The spinalis in the neck attaches from the spinous processes of C2 to the spinous process of C7.
- As a group, the erector spinae extends, laterally flexes, and ipsilaterally rotates the head and neck at the spinal joints.
