    • The mandible is a facial bone of the skull.
    • The mandible articulates with the temporal bones at the temporomandibular joints (TMJs).

    NOTES:

    1. The mandible is described in lay terms as the jaw.
    2. When there is a pathological condition involving the TMJ, it is often described as TMJ syndrome.
    3. The condyle of the mandible (the most posterior superior aspect) can be easily palpated directly anterior to the ear. Place palpating fingers pads anterior to the ear, and open and close the jaw.
