ATTACHMENTS:
- The serratus anterior attaches from the medial border of the scapula to ribs #1-9
ACTIONS:
- Protracts the shoulder girdle (scapula and clavicle) at the scapulocostal and sternoclavicular joints
- Upwardly rotates the shoulder girdle (scapula and clavicle) at the scapulocostal and sternoclavicular joints
- Elevates the shoulder girdle (scapula and clavicle) at the scapulocostal and sternoclavicular joints (upper fibers only)
- Depresses the shoulder girdle (scapula and clavicle) at the scapulocostal and sternoclavicular joints (lower fibers only)
NOTES:
- The serratus anterior looks like ribs in a well-developed individual.
- The serratus anterior also helps to hold the medial border of the scapula against the rib cage wall (i.e., prevents “winging of the scapula”).
