The Sternothyroid is a member of the Infrahyoid Group, which is composed of the:

- Sternothyroid
- Thyrohyoid
- Omohyoid
ATTACHMENTS:
- The sternothyroid attaches from the sternum to the thyroid cartilage.
ACTIONS:
- Depresses the thyroid cartilage (and therefore, also the hyoid bone).
- Flexes the neck at the spinal joints.
- Assists, via stabilization of the hyoid bone, depression of the mandible at the temporomandibular joints (TMJs).
NOTE: The sternothyroid is the only member of the infrahyoid group that does not attach onto the hyoid bone.
